When Marie Antoinette wanted to get away from it all, she headed to the hamlet and lived the simple life as a peasant, milking cows or sheep carefully maintained and cleaned by the servants. Dressed in a muslin dress and straw hat, with her ladies of the court, she used buckets made of Sevres porcelain specially decorated by the Manufacture Royale. The place was completely enclosed by fences and walls, and only friends of the Queen were allowed to visit the hamlet.
