Biking in New York City

April 2017

NYC Cycling

I have been wanting to try biking in New York City for a while but it always seemed to be too daunting. The cars, the crowds and the intensity of it all kept my feet firmly planted on the city sidewalks during my previous visits to the Big Apple.

This all changed during my most recent stay in the city. I decided to try out Unlimited Biking, one of New York’s top bike tour companies, and I opted to join a tour and have someone with “wheel” experience show me the ropes on how and where to experience the best of biking in the city. New York has begun to embrace this alternative type of urban transport and now sports some great biking trails that take you on scenic tours of the city. Heading out on a bike ride with an experienced urban cyclist was the perfect way to get a quick introduction and gain confidence on a bike in NYC. Unlimited Biking makes biking in the Big Apple easy by providing well maintained Cannondale bikes, informative bike guides and everything you need for safe city cycling, including helmets.

Central Park

Unfortunately, we only had a half-day available for our bike experience so we chose to head over to Central Park and join the two-hour tour of the Park. On my next NYC visit, I think I might try their Brooklyn Bridge Tour or the new tour of Harlem.

Central Park in New York City is a perfect spot to experience on a bike, with limited cars on the well-marked bike loop around the park, it is a stress-free way to enjoy riding in the city. The tour starts at the Unlimited Biking headquarters, located close to the park, where you pick up your bike, then off you go for a fun morning or afternoon of scenic biking with plenty of opportunity for exploring some the park’s most popular spots like the John Lennon memorial, Strawberry Fields, Belvedere Castle and Bethesda Terrence.

Bikes in the Big Apple

Our two-hour cycle tour of Central Park flew by too quickly, we had a great combination of spring blooms, warm weather and few crowds. After this quick taste of big city cycling, I can’t wait to head back to NYC and get on a bike again! Biking with Unlimited Biking was a perfect introduction to biking in New York, what a fantastic experience and one that I am looking forward to trying again on my next visit to the Big Apple.

  1. Hello, I used to live in Astoria, end of Queens metro line. Being from the north of Europe, I had a try to use a bike to reach Manhattan. Oh my god, I though I would die on the road. That was back in 2008, I hope it did improve
