Pyramid with a View: Mayan Ruins of Toniná

Toniná, isn’t as famous as Chichen Itza or Palenque – Chiapas’ most popular Mayan ruin but it is definitely worthy of a visit. Although the site is within easy driving distance from San Cristobal, there were only a handful of tourists present on the day of our visit. It was thrilling to be able to explore every crook and cranny of the site without crowds jostling for space along the narrow steps. Excavations are still underway but there is plenty to see including ball courts, carvings, and an exceptionally impressive, 80-meter-high pyramid, the highest of all Mayan temples.

Tonina, Mexico

Toniná is situated on a hill (at an elevation of 900m), there are 260 very steep steps to reach the top but it’s worth the climb. Once you arrive, you’re greeted with a spectacular view overlooking the peaceful green Ocosingo Valley. As you can see from the woman in the photo below, you can totally experience some serious zen moments at Toniná.
